B/E Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of Rockwell Collins Inc., is a leading manufacturer of aircraft interior products and we currently have some exciting positions based at our Kilkeel facility, including a Materials & Processes Engineer in Composites.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Materials & Processes Engineer will be responsible for researching, testing and the qualification of all materials in conjunction with current and new processes employed in composite components designed in-house.

JOB TITLE: Materials and Processes Engineer (Composites)

DEPARTMENT: Engineering

RESPONSIBLE TO: Engineering Manager

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week. Hours of work will be 8:30am – 5:15pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30am – 1:00pm Friday. The post holder may be required at times to work outside his/her normal working hours for the effective performance of the duties of the post.

JOB PURPOSE:

The job holder will be responsible for researching, testing and the qualification of all materials in conjunction with current and new processes employed in composite components designed in-house.

PRIME RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, test and qualify new materials, for use in composite components that offer performance advantages in relation to those currently available.

  • Co-ordinate with Universities and external organisations to define and participate in research projects that advance the state of the art of the materials and processes employed within our composite components.

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the Engineering Team and other multi-disciplinary teams across the facility in all material related matters.

  • Lead optimisation initiatives to bring about cost, weight and performance improvements in components designed and manufactured in-house.

  • Lead all mechanical testing trials, ensuring they are conducted in accordance with the relevant standards and all test data is stored in the mechanical test database.

  • Lead shop floor trials investigating material behaviour throughout the manufacturing processes used on-site.

  • Develop and maintain Material Specification Documents, Material Registers, and Manufacturing Process Specifications.

  • Contributing to culture of continuous improvement within the unit.

  • Any other duties as required to support the business needs.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • 3rd level qualification in Materials, Chemistry, Engineering or related.

  • A minimum of 2 years background in composites, chemistry, materials or engineering.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Relevant experience within a manufacturing environment.

  • Project management experience from initial research to implementation.

  • Experience of composite materials, manufacturing techniques, testing standards and data analysis.

  • Experience of certification in an aerospace environment.
